Responsible Wildlife Tourism Guidelines of Ayu in the Wild Sri Lanka

Ayu in the Wild's Sri Lanka itineraries are nature intensive and promotes sustainable practices on wildlife excursions guided by our skilled Naturalist Guides. We kindly request that our guests respect all wildlife, including marine life.

Here are Ayu in the Wild's Wildlife Welfare Policies;

  1. We do not endorse elephant back safari rides.

  2. Our wildlife tours and activities in Sri Lanka do not include visits to wildlife tourist attractions which we feel are involved in animal abuse; where we have conservation concerns about being detrimental to four-legged, finned or feathered species- for example, like those that encourage swimming with wildlife or touching them.

  3. Our Naturalist Guides do not attract birds, mammals or marine animals using unnatural interference, for example, like mimicking the animal sounds or coercing them with food.

  4. We educate travelers on holidays in Sri Lanka about unethical attractions through our blogs including on elephants and turtles.

  5. We do not accept bookings from guests who request physical interactions with captive wild or endangered species or send our guests to watch performances that exploit wildlife.

  6. We encourage anyone booking a holiday in Sri Lanka to first check the social media feeds of wildlife tours and attractions in Sri Lanka which show "red flag" posts such as guests feeding, petting, riding or snapping close-up selfies with wildlife. Please do not patronise these attractions. Genuine rescue facilities and rehabilitation centers minimise human interaction with wildlife.

  7. We support conservation efforts that protect wildlife habitats and try to minimise human-wildlife conflict.

We believe the future of tourism in Sri Lanka rests, not in higher visitor arrivals, but in aggressively pursuing that difficult balance between conserving biodiversity, respecting animals and engaging with people.
